Nazarene Parish Nursing

In 1998, NHCM (now NMO) began exploring how to support the ministry of parish nursing in local churches and communities. Parish Nursing is a health education program and promotion program which enables nurses who are members of local congregations to minister to others by utilizing their professional skills. Parish nurses work closely with local church staff members to provide outreach health care. These nurses meet the community at the point of need as well as serving the members of the congregation and staff. Unlike home health nurses, parish nurses do not engage in invasive nursing procedures or operate in acute care settings. Rather, they provide basic health care services and use a holistic, faith-based, approach to wellness. Parish nurses are often volunteers but may also be paid if the congregational resources permit.

Parish nursing is the fastest growing specialty area in nursing. ANA and Health Ministries Association standards govern its practice. To qualify to become a parish nurse, one must fulfill the following:

  • Be an RN licensed in the state where s/he is practicing (if s/he heads the team).
  • Take a basic preparation course for parish nurses (varies from 35 CEU hours to a Master’s program).
  • Keep up to date about medical developments and community resources.
  • Have a vital relationship with Jesus Christ.

Presently, the goals of Nazarene Parish Nursing are to do the following:

  • Determine which nurses are already involved in the program.
  • Assist in the development of new parish nursing sites.
  • Develop a vehicle for communicating and networking among nurses and sites.
